Plain looking, balding, very hairy, surprisingly alluring, tanned skin, lyrical tattoos.
Pretentious, driven, demonstrative
Behnerd tries overly hard to fit in, which can rub people the wrong way, but once you get to know him, he comes through even if it hurts his reputation. While not an exceptionally brave person, he puts himself at risk for a wide variety of causes.
He knows many people, but few respect him.
He doesn't like crows, with their beady eyes.
Behnerd grew up in a bard community, but strives to be a sailor. No one thought he could make it as a sailor, but 'twas his dream. He tells his parents he's more successful than he is.
Captain Gregory gave him his first chance as a sailor. Several people on Gregory's ship, including Archibald, the first mate, respected Behnerd. He feels like that's the last time he was really successful. He lost touch with the crew years ago. Later employers expected him to be a really good sailor, which he wasn't. He's nostalgic about Gregory's ship.
After Captain Gregory gave him his chance, went out on a short sea voyage. When he returned, he sent to his parents, so they would witness his triumphant return, but as he was waving at them, he fell off into the water. His parents shamefacedly walked away, composing a song for their boy.
The bard community lives outside the main city. Behnerd's parents are still alive.
