Kreemon bent down and touched the butcher's cheek with the back of his hand. Moren radiated an almost unnatural cold, as if he had just come in from bad snowstorm. He was most definitely dead.
“Who can tell me what happened here?” Kreemon asked of the crowd. No one volunteered an answer.
“Surely someone knows what has happened here?” He stood up and looked around the crowd. Kreemon remembered the hushed conversations he had heard about the butcher when he first arrived in town. The conversation had quieted down when he and his companions entered the tavern. It hadn't dawned on the weathered adventurer until now, the connection between that event and the things that the butcher said that first day in the rain when they met. Kree looked carefully at each person present, searching for a sign of recognition, and looking for the aversion of the eyes typical of one who knows the truth but will not speak.
One man, quite obviously not a fisherman, had his eyes fixed on the corpse collapsed on the floor. When he spoke, everyone became silent, because they, too, were curious. “No one knows,” he said quietly. “He was right there, lying on the floor with his neck broken, when the armsmaster came to buy meat.”
“My name is Kreemon, sir, and I had come to consider the butcher my friend. Who might you be? And where is this armsmaster?”
“Oh.” He took his eyes off the body for a moment. “I'm Feler. The armsmaster –” He looked at Kreemon's scabbard. “Are you a mercenary?”
Kree scowled at the word mercenary, but quickly regained his composure. Not really willing to reveal anything of his business, he replied, bowing his head slightly, “Sir Armsmaster, I am traveling with some friends on the road and stopped here in town for a bit of respite. A few of my friends have been working at the temple. I would very much like to help bring whomever has done this deed to justice though.” Kree looked back down at Moren's body and shook his head. “He seemed to be a good man. This is no way for his ilk to die.”
The man seemed at a loss for words for a moment. “No, I'm not the armsmaster. The armsmaster is Elmired.” The noise level of the room rose suddenly, and Feler paused and looked around. Nothing significant had occurred; the room's occupants had merely decided that the conversation was no longer worth listening to. “Although someone should be blamed for this.” He fixed his eyes again on the butcher. “I don't want anyone who can do that roaming around.”
“Is this armsmaster going to do anything about this? Where is he? Why is he not here investigating this?”
“It looks as if his blood's been drained from his body. Andrithaplugin-autotooltip__default plugin-autotooltip_bigAndrithanism

at Kreemon, as if only then hearing what he had asked. “Why should
Armsmaster Elmired be the one to investigate? Besides, I heard he was
pretty shaky when he left this place. I can see why.” Feler turned
around and walked towards the door.
“It's just that his title makes him sound like one who would. If it is not the Armsmaster's place to investigate, who in this town would?” Kreemon followed the man outside.
“The constable, probably. Or a guildmaster. The smell isn't any better out here. I don't know how anyone can stand to be a butcher.”
“And has the constable yet been here?”
“Don't know. Probably. Word about this kind of thing gets around.”
Kreemon was disgusted with the apathy shown by everybody surrounding the butcher's death. He still believed that there was something going on that others knew about but were hiding.
Kreemon spotted a young boy walking by the shop. He caught up to
the boy and touched his shoulder. “Do you know where the Temple of

Kreemon turned back to the butcher shop, not looking to see whether the boy agreed to the task. Back inside, he examined the body of the butcher from a distance, not wanting to move it just yet, for clues as to what happened to him. Kreemon had seen death before – he had even caused it – but the paleness of Moren's face was unnatural. In fact, it seemed as if color was actually returning to it as he lay there, as if he had been beyond death for a time, and was only now beginning to find peace. Moren's neck was broken in the front, possibly from a very awkward fall, and possibly from a sharp, but highly unusual attack. Kreemon could not imagine how anyone could put himself in the position for either.
Kreemon looked around the room for evidence of a struggle. The lock on the front door was broken, but there was no reason the door should have been locked during business hours. The lock could have been broken by a concerned armsmaster, after guessing through the windows that something was amiss. There were two windows at eye level, one on either side of the door, about six inches wide. They had neither shutters nor glass, and were probably used only for ventilation.
There was a back door in the shop, which was unlocked and open.
Behind it was a small grazing area for animals waiting for the

“What's going on? What happened?” The crowd parted for a tall man in fine traveler's clothes. He had a look of dignified authority about him, like he carried noble or bourgeois blood.
Kree looked up at the man, wondering whether he was the constable, or what passed for local authority around there. So far, he wasn't impressed with local authority. “The butcher has been killed. My name is Kreemon, a friend of his, and who would you be sir?”
At “killed”, the man's eyes widened slightly. He drew in a deep

Kree frowned; this was no town official. “Other than the poor man's neck has been broken, and he doesn't look… what is the word I am looking for, natural, even for a dead person. He was very cold initially, and the color of his face was not right, but it is changing, even as we speak. I had hoped that a town official would be here soon to start an investigation. “I met him that first day that you went into the temple. You were

Kreemon proceeded to retell the events of the preceding week, how
Moren seemed to know the hour of his death under the wet canvas of the

introspection during the fishing hours when he and Kreemon inhabited
the shop alone, and how he lay dead on the afternoon of the current

Maybe even some meltwater near the corpse? If not, we may be dealing

“No ice that I noticed. I have already come to the conclusion that we are dealing with some sort of magic here; what I saw was not natural. Someone, or some thing, took Moren's life with the aid of magic or a magical ability. I feel bad; I should have put things together more quickly. I didn't put a connection together between what Moren said and what we heard at the tavern that first night. If I had, I might have prevented this. that the most likely cause of death was poison of some sort outside of

education in our world today. I have no way of knowing the degree of

“However, as you probably know, history is a major subject at the seminaries of Anditha, where I was blessed with knowledge. Be all that as it may, we can discuss history when we have more leisure; for now, the mystery of the butcher's death remains an open question. And, though mostly through the concern of my friend Kreemon's concern over the unusual death of his friend, the butcher, I confess to my own curiosity and concern as well.
“As to your argument regarding sorcerers or mages, it is a good one, but has one weakness: suppose a sorcerer from elsewhere has recently arrived in town under clandestine circumstances, and has not contacted any mage here, if there are any, for reasons of his – or her – own, then your line of reasoning would lead to a blank wall, or worse to an unjust accusation. Not all sorcerers are – or were – evil. Many were, and thus did the purges begin.
“In any case, it may not, as you suggest, have been sorcery at all that produced the strange state of the corpse, but something more mundane, which is why I asked about the presence of ice. Butchers and fishermen often use ice, if they can obtain it to preserve their wares. You seem to have an extensive knowledge of herb-lore, as do I. Nothing in my experience, either, can account for the frozen state of the poor butcher's corpse.
