It was ten minutes before Sahl saw light again. Sir Jerenil and five other men, all pretty banged up themselves, were rapidly pulling boards and bits of furniture away. When they had finally cleared enough, Sahl rolled over, exhausted. He didn't think his back was broken, but he was almost certainly bruised and bleeding all over. Plenty of time to think of that later, after he'd had a chance to rest.

There were many with serious internal injuries, so she was very busy, and soon exhausted by her efforts, but she kept on. At one point, nearly depleted, she asked an acolyte to bring her some food, fruits if available. An hour after Sahl came in with the baron, a new influx of injured people started to arrive, one by one, every few minutes. When asked where they were coming from, they were happy to explain. The First Knight, being one of the few large buildings still standing, had become a place of refuge, but it didn't have the resources of the temple. It seemed safest, however, to keep the injured holed up. It was just too dangerous to drag them through darkness and fog amidst all the rubble. Then A coal-skinned foreigner had taken charge of the situation. He blazed a trail through the fog, setting up stakes, ropes and heavy chunks of rubble that wouldn't easily by kicked out of place. The trail wound about, but kept to the safest areas, near exterior walls of still-standing buildings when possible, and crossing streets along heavy beams pulled from crumbled houses. He placed markers close enough together that each was well in sight of the next and previous, and stationed people at intervals along the road, especially where the route looked obscure, to help others along, and offer their assistance when they saw anyone struggling with a burden.
This explanation did not come in one piece. It was collected in fragments from dozens of men, while priests rushed away in the middle of conversations to take care of some screaming patient or other.
Some of the men also mentioned a little girl who was telling physicians how to do their jobs. The more skilled healers in the temple could see that more than one of the injured people from the First Knight had had narrow brushes with death, prevented by quick and precise attention to the areas where they needed it most.
