“Looking up some old friends, consulting at the great library and doing some trading before moving on. Any news?”
“Sign here.” The guard held out a roster. “Both of you. You will report your lodging plans to the town guard, as well as all trade activity, and all personal items bought or sold while you're here. Stay on major streets when possible. This isn't a good time for trade; you may not be allowed to leave the town for some weeks. The gatekeeper nodded at Kreemon's mark. “So you're a trader who can't read, and without much in the way of trade goods. What will you be selling?”
“I will be purchasing, hopefully. I deal in trainable animals. I buy them and train them to do tricks and then sell them off. It is actually a decent living. Don't need to read to do that.”

The land on which the town sits was added to maelbourg index was not the same place as it had been weeks ago. Doors and windows were closed, and the streets were nearly empty. A few of the commoners hurried from place to place, trying not to stand out, and there were small clusters of guards here and there, escorting some townsman or other in military formation. There were also priests, and these populated the streets in great numbers, looking like black-robed patrolmen. Occasionally, one would stop at a house and stand in the doorway, speaking with a resident in hushed tones, but mostly, they just walked around purposefully, keeping an eye on everything at once. Kreemon replied, “We were actually headed somewhere else but the shortcut we took brought us here, and then we bumped into you. Stranger things have happened.
“The rumors about townsman being corrupted about magic, you have anything more on that? Has the source of the corrupting magic been identified?”
“Isn't it obvious? How many people do you know who can influence minds like that?”
“To us it is obvious, but what about the priests and the townsman? Do they know the source?”
“Some do. You see, he worked his magic on a couple townsmen, and it wore off. That's dangerous stuff he plays with.”

Maelbourg is a walled town in the Barony of Huerten, with a population of approximately six thousand. Kreemon shook his head. “I am sure there will be people coming through here with stories of the quake. It ripped a tear in the earth miles long. Things are changing. Otherwise, I would turn my back and leave this place.”
