This is a rewrite of Turn 8, Turn 9 and Turn 10. I have taken many more liberties with events and dialogue in these rewrites than in the turns, where I never modify dialogue except to correct typos.
The morning offered a pitiful view of Grenzig. The doors to public buildings swung free in the wind,
some hanging by a single hinge or laying on the ground. Shutters had been smashed, and scattered shards
of broken glass were all that remained of once valuable Duerstadtplugin-autotooltip__default plugin-autotooltip_bigThe City of Duerstadt
Duerstadt has been the capital of Rang since the reign of Diure XXXVIII (729-749). It is a major trading port on the Ice Sea (so called for the occasional iceberg that shows up therein). The Ice Sea separates Rang from the Skendu Islands to the north. Although the harbor of Duerstadt isn't threatened by pack ice in the winter, the various Skendui ports are, and the distance between the north coast of windows. Prisons were packed with
townsmen, guild masters and other officials who had been foolish enough to continue to oppose the new
rule it in the face of the mob. Soldiers lay dead in the streets, clerical rites left unperformed;
there were too many to carry away in one night. Many people stayed inside, with doors barred and
windows shuttered and latched, waiting to see what would become of them in this new town. Some were
just hoping not to be noticed. These common people who had been open about liking Grenzig the way it was,
paced anxiously back and forth in their homes, waiting for their future to be decided.
But most of the people were happy. Those who had supported the new rule before it came were freed from their cells, and the temples were open once again. A great show was made by the entire population, even those who would normally avoid the temples at all costs, of attending morning services. Some measure of freedom had returned to the town which had valued its freedom from the baron for nearly a hundred years. People celebrated in the streets, and though it was morning, the bars were full. Cheers could be heard now and again from all regions of Grenzig. The contrast between the sound of celebration and the sight of devastation was jarring.
While the town celebrated, the five travelers stood together in the meeting house with the townsman. The room was crowded with those high officials who had supported the takeover, officials hoping to become part of the new government or gain valuable guild master appointments for their loyalty.
“Thank you,” the townsman said, a smile on his face. “Thank you! I never supposed it would be so easy.
“You might have thought me overly secretive, but it has been for my own protection. I could not risk anyone knowing more than they had to, but now, I can put your minds at ease. My name is Balban, former farmsmaster of Critzig. I used to control the distribution of food in a town of two thousand souls. Now I am the governing townsman of the circle of five towns, including Flen, Critzig, Hourtzbourg, Dmerzig and Grenzig. Until now, I have ruled subtly through proxies, and have not revealed my name. Today, I can finally make my presence known. The southern towns of Huerten are united, and can prosper more than they ever did under the rule of Baron Huerten. Soon, all the towns of Huerten will be united, trade and wealth will expand, and perhaps, just perhaps, we can end the stifling taxation imposed by the baron and free the towns once and for all.”
“You five have been instrumental towards making this happen, and your reward will be increased
appropriately, if only you continue to fight for my cause. I can spare four hundred attles for any of

properly ordained clerics may hold worship there. And perhaps Balban himself may make a donation of,
say, a hundred gold attles, for restoration of damages to the Temple while it was closed. Use the
remainder of my share of what you have offered to rebuild the town.”

Kay is an attractive, eighteen year old girl. She has dark brown hair, tanned skin and hazel eyes. The bow she carries is of a very fine quality. Kay wears brown calfskin breeches, and a green wool vest. When traveling, she wears brown deerskin breeches and a red linen vest. Her old cloak is black, and made of fine but worn wool. She has become a close friend of, “am not so noble that I'd refuse gold. My pouch has been empty too often in the
past, and I welcome an opportunity to fill it.”
Brinn considered accepting the offer of a wife – his stature made it unlikely that he'd find one on his own, but he wasn't ready to settle down quite yet, and four hundred attles would go a long way toward making that possible in the future. “Same goes for me,” he said. “A little greed never hurt anyone.”

The offer of magic was unexpected in a place where skills like his were unheard of, but if it was not a
joke, there was no way he could refuse. He had been concerned about Balban, that his party had
unwittingly usurped the local authority and placed a man in a position where he could do further harm to
the social order. This new offer almost pushed all such thoughts from his mind, but he had to know one
thing first. He raised his dark hood to shadow his face and spoke, his voice becoming low and sinister.

“Huerten collects his taxes, but offers nothing in return. Yes, he stations the king's soldiers and
knights throughout his land, but they are only in this barony because it's on the southernmost border

more often than might have been warranted by her contributions to the conversation. Abashed, and with
a warm face, Sahl refocused. Finally, it seemed that everyone else had asked all that they were going
to, and had been compensated for the assistance rendered to Balban. Only one concern sat like a massive
weight in the mind of the easterner, and he addressed it.
“Master Balban,” he began, his voice as firm as his eyes were piercing. “It is generous, this reward you offer. It is generous, this celebrating that you make for the folk of Grenzig. I ask you two things for my part in your victory. The first is very simple, me being only a simple man of simple needs, that you are helping me to supply myself for more travelling. The second is from my heart, and it is that, in your efforts, in all the ruling and uniting you do, please to remember the smiles on the faces around us tonight. Be the kind of leader for them that they are always having reason to smile.” As Sahl finished speaking, Balban noticed the tear making its way down Sahl's face, the single monument to this foreigner's memory of the day he left his home forever, because of leaders who cared for the weight of their purses more than the smiles on the faces of their people.

the motions. Brinn was so giddy with the feeling of gold in his pocket that he allowed himself to be
lifted onto someone's shoulders, where he danced in a raised circle with the children of Grenzig. Their
amusement, for once, didn't bother him at all.

was taken to two of the strangest people he had ever met. The library was small; there were no sponsors
in Grenzig to pay for the upkeep, so almost every book was worm-eaten and at least a hundred years old.
Beneath the library was a basement, dank, mildewed and infested with mice, and totally unlit except for
a single torch sconce by the stairs. There was a passage, hidden more by the dark than any design, that
led further down to the sub-basement. After following the steeply sloped tunnel, not even carved with
steps, a door opened into blinding light.
At a depth usually reserved for crawlspaces and dungeons, there was a large, well-lit room, finely furnished and decorated with small, exotic statues on pedestals, and wooden carvings hanging on paneled walls. Each of these artistic creations was tastefully lit by two or three candles, whose combined warmth made the room uncomfortably hot.
As odd as the sub-basement was in this decrepit library, its inhabitants made the room look commonplace. Both men were at least seventy years old, artistically wrinkled throughout, with age on their faces and youth in their eyes. One perpetually gazed ahead, focused on nothing. He was blind, but walked about with the confidence of a sighted man. The other shifted his gaze about incessantly, as if believing that if he took his eye off anything for a moment, it would disappear, and never stopped moving.

more dramatic, or more powerful. These were the spells of an apprentice. One was designed to make
household chores a bit easier by creating a force that could sweep floors, stir pots and so forth.
Another could mend torn clothing. A third was able to produce minor tricks of light, or create small
amounts of fragile material, presumably for the entertainment of children or other such nonsense.

They were
lavishly accommodated, were fed well every evening, and had the run of the kitchen during the day. Beds
were a little hard to come by on the first night, but over time, lush mattresses stuffed with exotic
materials that used to belong to opposing townsmen were relocated to Balban's house, which itself had
belonged to some townsman.
Balban made many changes in Grenzig, some of which the group of adventurers were privy to. The law which had allowed the closing of the temples was repealed. New laws were instituted to ensure the long-accepted freedoms of guildsmen and laborers. Trade was opened between Grenzig and the other towns Balban controlled. Common men were made into soldiers to supplement the town guard. These were placed on watch at the gates and walls, and the tree which had allowed access that one night was cut down. A system was instituted whereby judges would be monitored by the agents of townsmen, to reduce corruption. Taxes were levied to support all these changes, of course. Celebrations were held to maintain the support that had won Grenzig for Balban, and new taxes were imposed to cover those costs as well, along with the salaries of all the new tax collectors. Still, the people were happy; they felt free.
Before dawn on the last day of Arwid, a week after Balban took over, the town woke to the sounds of

The bandits had broken camp, and were attacking the town. Vastly outnumbered, their surprise attack was still quite effective. Soldiers were rolling out of bed, grabbing their weapons and rushing to the scene. When the fight finally turned against the bandits, they fled, scattering through the woods. No more than one or two were found.
Two hours later, they attacked again, on the north side this time. They grabbed what loot they could get their hands on and fled. That seemed to be the end of it, but the town guard, swollen through Balban's recruiting, remained out in force. Were it not for the known threat, townspeople might have been concerned that this increasingly large town guard with its military organization was a threat to them.
Three days passed before the next attack. This time, as the bandits were being fought back, Balban himself
came out, and led the soldiers into the woods. When they came out again, he said that Grenzig had nothing

by Balban. It was clear that the townsman wanted them to take the forest path. The west road was long
and windy, and passed over many hills, and would be a two week journey. The forest path would be faster,
but there were multiple poorly-defined hazards that could slow them down. They could also try travelling
a straight line, away from any path, but they would probably have to leave the horses behind, and there
was a strong risk of getting lost, not to mention that it would take them through two of the danger areas
marked on the map.
Well, it was a fine day anyway. They decided to enjoy the ride until they had to make their decision.
