Shadow Knife

System:
Author:The DM

The Shadow Knife is actually no more than a small scabbard, but it appears to have an elaborate hilt sticking out of it. When the wielder draws the weapon, it emerges as a long hunting knife, unevenly black like tarnished silver. When the knife is clear of the scabbard, another hilt appears in its place.

The Shadow Knife can exist outside its scabbard for up to five minutes, after which it fades into a dark mist and disperses. There is no limit to the number of knives that can be drawn.

The Shadow Knife is a +2 weapon, which deals 1d8 damage to normal creatures, and 2d8 to creatures native to the plane of shadow. Attempts to break the knife automatically succeed, causing it to dissipate into mist.

The knife is made of a shadowy substance, and anyone interacting with it may attempt a DC16 Intelligence save to see through the illusion. Once the illusion is penetrated, the knife functions like a non-magical dagger, dealing 1d4 damage. Creatures from the plane of shadow may not attempt saves. Damage from other sources, such as Sneak Attack, is not halved.

The Shadow Knife functions as a +4 weapon, dealing 1d8+4 damage to normal creatures, and 2d8+4 to creatures native to the plane of shadow. It scores a critical hit on 19-20. The knife can also be thrown. Attempts to sunder the knife automatically succeed, causing it to dissipate into mist.

The knife is made of a shadowy substance, and anyone interacting with it makes a DC20 will save to see through the illusion. Once the illusion is penetrated, the knife does only half damage, and no longer overcomes magic damage resistence. Creatures from the plane of shadow automatically fail their saves. Additional damage, such as damage from Sneak Attack or Power Attack, is not halved.
